The Viscount had an idea that he might have found a hill fort on his bicycle travels and wanted a second opinion. So last Sunday we tootled up the Kidderminster road to Hagley to check out the evidence.
Sure enough, hidden in the woods of Wychbury Hill are the distinctive ditches and banks of a hill fort, which later research showed to be Iron Age.
Now that area's famous for follies - the obelisk, the Roman villa, the castle, the four stones on Clent. All built by the family living at Hagley Hall to improve their view. At one point, before, it must be said, the size of the hill fort became clear, the Viscount suggested that maybe this also was a folly.
But no, it's the genuine article and noted as so with olde worlde writing on the Ordnance Survey map. And it's not even the most interesting thing on Wychbury Hill. More on the obelisk and its message later.
In the meantime, here's a felled tree that's been used as a natural alter for offerings in the wood.
